The Military Veterans Act, 2011 (Act No. 18 of 2011); is an act of the Parliament of South Africa that defines the government as the responsible for governing the affairs of the countries military veterans. It also defines the benefits available to these veterans and names the President of South Africa as their patron-in-chief. The act further establishes an Advisory Council on Military Veterans and the Military Appeals Board. The bill was passed by Parliament on 16 August 2011 and was assented too by President Jacob Zuma on 2 December 2011. == Aims of the Act == The purpose of the act is to recognise and honour military veterans for the sacrifices that they made on behalf of the nation. It also aims to assist military veterans transition from active service to civilian life. The act further aims to assist veteran's with disabilities as well as improve the quality of life for military veterans and their dependants as a whole. It aims to provide benefits and services to the veterans and ensure that they can contribute to the development of the country. Lastly the act aims to contribute to nation building and reconciliation in the country.〔
